A Gen Z sat in an interview.
Everything was going well.
Then HR asked,
“Why do you want to leave your current job?”
Gen Z answered,
“I’m looking for growth and better learning opportunities.”
HR frowned slightly.
“But you’ve changed jobs twice in three years.
That doesn’t look stable.”
Gen Z paused.
Then asked,
“May I clarify something?”
HR nodded.
“How long does your company usually take to promote high performers?”
HR replied.
“About three to four years,”
Gen Z.
“And if growth stalls before then?”
HR.
“There’s an expectation to wait.”
The room went quiet.
That’s when the real issue surfaced.
When people say
“Gen Z lacks loyalty,”
what they really mean is:
Gen Z questions a system where:
- Learning is delayed,
- Progression is slow by design,
- And patience is rewarded more than performance.
They watched older generations:
- Stay in the same role for years,
- Be promised growth “next cycle,”
- And wait quietly,
only to be told,
“your time will come.”
So Gen Z chose differently.
They don’t reject commitment.
They reject stagnation.
They believe loyalty should be built on opportunity,
not just time served.
It’s not instability.
It’s intention.
And honestly,
if growth has an expiry date…
can you really blame them for moving?
An interesting exercise.
Also helped brush up my speed reading skills
But the reason I’m sharing it is because embedded in it is a principle that applies well beyond speed reading: You see the ‘big picture’ only when you have a single focal point & eliminate distractions…
