If you're looking for your next market to enter in Nigeria, choose Oyo State.

In Q1 2020, Oyo ranked 8th in VAT generation nationwide. Today, Oyo is Nigeria's 3rd highest VAT-generating state. In Q1 2026, it briefly rose to 2nd, behind only Lagos. That didn't happen by chance, you only achieve this by growing the economy.

Let me explain what has happened over the past seven years.

Since 2019, Oyo State has deliberately positioned itself as an economic hub by aligning infrastructure development with its comparative advantages.

1. The first priority was to strategically connect the Oke-Ogun agricultural belt, Ogbomoso axis, Ibarapa, Oyo, Iseyin, Saki, Eruwa, Igboho, Fasola, and other production clusters to Ibadan, the state's largest consumption and distribution centre. This has reduced transport costs, improved market access, and strengthened value chains across agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce.

2. Oyo has built its agribusiness strategy around value addition, not the export of raw commodities. Governor @seyimakinde and @akande_debo have consistently emphasized that agricultural products should be processed locally into finished goods rather than exported in their raw form.

3. The 1,000-hectare Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub, developed through a Public-Private Partnership, attracted the African Development Bank (AfDB), which upgraded it into the South-West's first Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ). Building on its success, AfDB is now replicating the model with a 3,000-hectare SAPZ at the 12,000-hectare Ijaiye Farm Settlement.

4. This strategy has attracted over $170 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) and integrated more than 8,000 smallholder farmers into formal agricultural value chains.

5. Companies including FrieslandCampina WAMCO, IITA-GoSeed, Milkin Barn, and several processors of cassava, cashew, and tomatoes now process agricultural produce within the state, creating jobs, increasing industrial output, and strengthening Oyo's economy.

6. The agribusiness ecosystem continues to attract processors that source produce directly from local farmers instead of simply exporting raw materials.

7. The consumer economy has expanded just as rapidly. Hospitality establishments reportedly grew from about 1,424 in 2019 to over 5,300 by 2024. Hotels, restaurants, lounges, event centres, and entertainment businesses are springing up across Ibadan. Today, Oyo arguably has Nigeria's most vibrant nightlife after Lagos and Abuja.

8. You can hardly drive through Ibadan without seeing new commercial developments translating into higher economic activity. Brands like Item7 tested the Ibadan market, succeeded, and have continued to expand because the demand is there.

9. This growth is driven by more than population alone. Oyo has a largely urban population with strong purchasing power, supporting sustained demand for value-added goods and services within the formal economy.

10. Ibadan continues to attract businesses and professionals because it offers significantly lower operating costs than Lagos while providing access to one of Nigeria's largest urban markets.

11. With improving quality of life, expanding infrastructure, and a growing commercial base, Ibadan was recognised by UN-Habitat as one of Africa's fastest-growing cities.

The surveillance missions carried out by officers of NAF have given us tremendous insights into what the ground troops are facing. As I said during one of my updates, the surveillance aircraft which our administration procured for Oyo State is currently at the Air Force Base in Lagos. We look forward to receiving the assembled aircraft very soon so that it can be used for the purpose for which it was procured.
