“What Is Life? ” by Paul Nurse. A geneticist traces our understanding of life and explores its essence. It’s incredibly dense for an introduction to biology��you can barely turn the pages without Googling along the way.

Book read today: *Queen of Mars* by Satoshi Ogawa. A hard SF novel that is ultimately a human drama, with a mystery-like plot and a satisfying yet apocalyptic ending where hope lingers alongside a sense of doom.
