At 20, Bittu Tabahi stepped into a polluted river — without gloves, boots or even knowing how to swim — and started cleaning it himself.

On 26 January 2026, the BSc student from Madhya Pradesh began cleaning the Ajnar River near a temple in Biaora, removing plastic and other waste that had turned parts of the river into a dumping ground.

He even began turning puja waste into compost and pooled money with friends to buy tools and dustbins.

The effort cost him around ₹30,000, and at one point, he suffered infections on his hands.

Then his work reached thousands online. Some accused him of doing it for likes.

Bittu’s surname means “destruction.” Today, he is trying to destroy something else: water pollution.

Because sometimes, change begins when one person stops waiting for someone else to start.

What if the rain falling on your society could help bring groundwater back from 330 feet to just 40–60 feet?

That’s exactly what Vispi Baji Kasad helped make possible at Laxminagar Society in Navsari, Gujarat.

For the last 12 years, rainwater from the roads of a 50+ bungalow society, covering more than 25,000 sq ft, has been diverted into a properly built harvesting well instead of being lost as runoff.

The result? More than 1.5 crore litres of rainwater harvested every year, and over 20 crore litres saved in 12 years.

And perhaps the most powerful part: he did it completely free of cost, in memory of his late mother-in-law, Mrs. Gitaben Bharatbhai Desai.

Vispi also offers free guidance across India on rainwater harvesting, including a simple one-chamber terrace filtration system that he says can help an average household save 10–15 lakh litres annually.

If one society can do it, imagine what thousands could achieve.
