Someone borrowed MK80,000 from me to be repaid the next day, but it has now been three months. To be honest, I sensed the desperation when he asked for it and, as a rule of thumb, I never lend money to people who borrow urgently while promising immediate repayment, so the moment I gave him the money, I mentally wrote it off. I just never told him. Over the months, I noticed he had been avoiding me, so today I called him twice just to check on him, but he didn’t pick up. I then sent him a message saying, “Akulu, sikuti ndikufuna ndikumbutse za ndalama. Just wanted to check on you.” He is not a close friend, but someone who has been helpful to me over the years, often running errands whenever I needed assistance and I compensated him for it. After seeing my message, he called me and apologised about the money. He then told me that he lost his younger sister over a month ago and that life has not been the same since. The money he borrowed was to help while she was in hospital, where she eventually passed away. They had lost their parents years ago, and she was the only family he had left. Suddenly, the MK80,000 felt so small and insignificant compared to the burden he has been carrying. Somehow, that conversation has completely ruined my day and reminded me that sometimes money is really not the most important thing!
