Ultimately, it showed the weaknesses at the very top level we already knew. Left back and striker for sure, and probably a holding mid Pep 100% trusts.
It’s been a brilliant season – PL by a huge margin, one cup, a final and a semi final – but gutted it ends on such a flat note.
Feels harsh to be critical of Pep, but selection last night so odd. We've won the double and got to the final of the CL playing a certain way, with players in their best positions, knowing their roles inside out. Changing all that for a one-off game is just really puzzling.
That said, not sure how much is down to the selection/formation and how much is because they all had an off day. Nobody turned up. Defence was shaky, midfield was sloppy and slow, attack toothless. Feels like pressure (and Chelsea’s structure/solidity) got the better of them.
@jlewis2891 No idea tbh, there's a different story or angle every day. Realistically though the amount of people who know about any team's genuine transfer plans is so, so small - not sure I'd believe any report at this stage, either positive or negative about Kane or Haaland!
Pep completely right to pick that team with Dortmund/Chelsea up next.
Really, just shows why Sterling, Jesus and Torres are benched for the big games. Gulf between their output and Mahrez/Foden is huge.
@bloodylyons Agree completely. At least he tried things and wanted to make stuff happen. Maybe that element of risk / lack of control is what Pep doesn't like...
@stefanradu9 In a sense, leaving Torres out is the strangest decision. Makes good runs, always looks energetic, brings a different threat, eye for a goal... everything we lacked today.
@buyingtheleague You just don't need him and Gundogan in a game like that. He takes so many touches on the ball, so slow to move it on, so dull to watch. Gundogan can sit deeper, then get another attacking option next to KDB.
@sj87_stacey I'm still massively pro-Pep (I think you have to be after what he's done since he came?) but definitely needs freshening up. And that's probably across players as well as ideas.
It's mad how Pep is so affected by teams who do something different against us that it impacts everything we normally do.
Liverpool's pressing, United's counter-attacking, Lyon's system... play well against us once and we'll then abandon our style in future out of total fear.
@samgoldman91 Sounds like we'll go big this summer for Aguero's replacement, which we need to. Torres/Foden on the bench is frustrating when Mahrez/Sterling off the boil. Fernandinho a big hole as well, as per WhatsApp...
@PaulDee9 It's fine for Liverpool, think we all get that. Hard to say it's the right approach for Lyon (7th in the league) or United (inferior to us, easy to get at, low on confidence) though. We should impose ourselves on them, not live in fear.
