It’s been 20 years since the City said it was building a “luxury” cruise terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
What a sad couple of decades it’s been, with cruise ships spewing deadly diesel emissions into our air (& water), and @NYCEDC unable to build a working shore power system.
I decided to write a thread detailing the history of shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. (Long 🧵 warning) Here it is:
Brooklyn Cruise Terminal Shore Power Timeline, 2005 - Present
2005 - The Bloomberg administration announces a plan to create a luxury “state of the art” cruise terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn

China's first and the world's largest all-electric intelligent container ship launched commercial operations in #Zhejiang province on Wednesday. With a capacity of 742 TEUs, the vessel runs on 20,000 kWh of battery power, saving 580 tonnes of fuel and cutting CO2 emissions by over 1,400 tonnes annually. 🔋🌊#TechChina #GreenChina
The main problem has been the cruise industry's reluctance to invest in this technology. All other arguments against, or downplaying of, the benefits of shore power are belied by the ever-increasing number of successful shore power berths around the world. https://t.co/wqxx9pDK19
ElectrifyNY Statement: NYS-Senate Passes the Clean Deliveries Act for the Third Year in a Row - "High pediatric asthma rates and premature deaths are linked to poor air quality due to increased diesel truck traffic to and from mega-warehouses. The Clean Deliveries Act has garnered statewide support as it provides a necessary and flexible roadmap for cleaner air from e-commerce mega-warehouse operations and paves the way for a future without haze, diesel fumes, and climate pollution" https://t.co/01xPdAES8R
Shore power part of Manhattan Cruise Terminal plan - for ships, tugs, and other harbor vessels. As we've been saying (for a very long time now!), shore power incentivizes the switch to electric or hybrid vessels of all kinds.
"As signaled for some time, shore power is key in the master plan, which includes an initial commitment of $20m for this at the terminal.
Besides cruise ships, harbor vessels including tugs will now be able to connect to shore power to allow them to recharge their batteries and allow the tug fleet to begin the conversion to hybrid and fully electric propulsion through the use of on-board battery storage.
Brooklyn Cruise Terminal has provided shore power for some years but the recent installation of a mobile system allows more ships to connect there"

Ever looked up at ship funnels belching fumes and wondered if things could be better? Thanks to @CleanShippingCo@_Oceanbird_@UCL_Energy for your insights -

However, all is not lost - not by a long shot, as there is an immediate opportunity to slash GHG emissions from shipping, minimize fuel burn and the overall cost of the energy transition and that is to strengthen and make enforceable the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), the IMO’s cornerstone energy efficiency measure”
The carbon tax on vessels is a part of @IMOHQ GHG strategy to phaseout carbon emissions via operation, technical and market based measures. The carbon tax will go to a net zero fund which will be used for decarbonization of the industry, similar to that of Montreal Protocol.
Disney's Cruise Line / @DisneyCruise leads all #cruise🚢lines with a per capita sexual assault rate of 75 per 100,000 passengers and crew. This is two and one-half times higher than @CarnivalCruise and is higher than 49 out of 50 states in the U.S. #Disney

Good news for #RedHook ! The polluting behemoth is leaving. This MSC ship should’ve never been allowed to dock in Bklyn when it was incompatible with the shore power system & there was no plan for traffic #cancer#asthma PM2.5 #climate#health#DirtyDiesel https://t.co/8bbQfVta3J
The shore power jib (crane) is no longer at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. What’s going on? Has the long promised “mobile” jib been put into service? Or is every ship now idling 24/7, burning dirty diesel fuel, while docked at the terminal? @NYCEDC@CMAlexaAviles#RedHook
“We have work certificates from Selecmar that sells Cuban workers for luxury cruises and withholds 80% of the workers' wages and [we also have] certificates from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior proving these allegations. All this is ratified by more than 1111 complaints.” https://t.co/gYGV8FOQua
