Would someone with this background join the DRDO today. I would say the answer is probably not. Quality of new personal has been on a downward trend inside the organization.
Meet Dr. Samir V. Kamat !
(Chairman, DRDO and Secretary of R&D at Dept of Defence)
The man leading India’s strategic defence research and next-gen military technologies.
> He did his BTech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur
> And a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from University of Virginia
> After that, he joined DRDO as a scientist through the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory
> And built deep expertise in high-performance materials, titanium alloys & armour systems
> Also worked on naval materials and high-temperature materials
> Eventually, he became Director, DMRL and Director General (Naval Systems and Materials),
> where he led indigenous development in naval stealth technologies, special alloys, underwater systems, and high-strength defence materials
He took charge as Chairman of DRDO in August 2022
> Overseeing missile systems, naval technologies, electronic warfare & unmanned platforms
> Driving advanced materials innovation and indigenous defence manufacturing
> Supervising strategic defence programmes and major technology trials
At a time when warfare is rapidly evolving:
> He is pushing DRDO for high-risk, high-reward indigenous technologies
> Strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem
> Enabling MSMEs to play a key role in defence innovation
His core belief: R&D is not an expense, it is an investment.
From materials science labs to leading DRDO,
Dr. Samir V. Kamat’s journey reflects the rise of India’s defence innovation.
@cvkrishnan Yes absolutely, but that's why its hard to make analogies or compare either space or strategic programs with programs meant to produce front line tactical stuff. It's hard to say if ISRO can do it or the ATV can do it. Why can't GTRE or ADA. Different scale of difficulty.
People in the comments are trying to come up with all sorts of technical reasons as to why, but like with everything in our MIC, the answer usually comes down to a complete lack of vision/leadership from the User or MoD.
How come a country self-sufficient in surface to surface ballistic missiles (even tactical ones) - couldn't produce air to surface versions? Is it because there were no such requirements placed with the DRDO? Or DRDO couldn't do it? Or what?
@cvkrishnan One of the key characteristics of future systems (fighters or not) is deeper and deeper integration with the each other. Making our already painful approach of piecemeal orders from 10 different countries+indigenous systems more and more untenable every decade.
The next two decades where will call for the application of Indian airpower more than ever before, as it suffers a slow and painful decline. The time to litigate who will make the AMCA, who will partner to build our engines, was 2016, not 2026.
The fact that we're still litigating this in 2026 means that this jet won't enter service in 2030s. We had this incredible opportunity with the mk2 and AMCA. True to form our leadership has bungled it once again. We will import the rafale, then our fifth gen jet.
Huge. HAL out of the race to develop & manufacture India’s stealth fighter AMCA, report @manupubby & @rahulsinghx. Will be the first purely private sector driven combat aircraft effort in India.
A version of this could replace the existing tugs on Vikrant and Vikramaditya. Saves a lot of space. Increase rate of aircraft movements, added flexibility.
Raghu Vamsi's deeptech ARROBOT unveils autonomous aerospace systems at Wings India 2026
At the event, Arrobot is showcasing a portfolio of indigenous unmanned and autonomous platforms that integrate propulsion, systems engineering, mission logic and platform integration. In addition to its defence-focused autonomous systems, Arrobot has unveiled autonomous ground tugs for aircraft and helicopters.
As someone who care about domestic capability, this is uniquely disappointing. This is class of system is something we were supposed to have mastered decades ago, and yet still our system managed to find an import.
The ₹293 Cr. contract signed with NIBE Ltd is signed for "Suryastra" long range rocket launcher system.
Its India's 1st Made in India universal multi calibre rocket launcher, with strike capability of 150 km & 300 km.
It can hit multiple targets simultaneously, with a CEP <5 m, & same launcher can fire loitering munitions up to 100 km range.
The system is being produced in collaboration with Israel’s Elbit Systems, under a TCA signed in July 2025
Lotus Advanced Technologies has secured a ₹640+ crore contract from HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division for the supply of AESA Maritime Patrol Radars, in partnership with IAI Elta, Israel. The systems will be integrated on Indian Navy Dornier 228 aircraft.

Bangalore with it's economy and weather, public spaces and urban fabric has the potential to be our best city, unfortunately it's being planned and run by morons. If it outsourced it's planning to CUMTA, it could be a truly great city.
Bengaluru’s urban transport is being handled by a group that clearly has no understanding of integration. That’s why there is zero coordination and no focused effort to ease traffic or improve public transport in this city.
Take the Cantonment routing issue. Even if the Pink Line had gone through Cantonment and the train slowed slightly, the metro would have taken barely 1–2 minutes extra to reach the airport. Is that minor trade-off really worth sacrificing an integrated transport system?
Who is rushing to the airport on the metro? And once the Blue Line was announced as the airport link, why wasn’t the original alignment restored?
A simple foot-over-bridge is the bare minimum corrective step. It costs about ₹40 crore - yet the agencies claim they don’t have funds and offer completely illogical excuses.
Cantonment is a crucial public transport hub. Strengthening it can even decongest KSR SBC. But no one wants to work together. Every department is busy guarding its turf while Bengaluru pays the price.
