Before Kota, the IIT-JEE was purely elitist. Not by design, but by access.

If you weren't from South Delhi or South Bombay, you didn't even know Irodov or Halliday, Resnick and Walker existed. No local teacher knew the exam's pattern.

You were competing blindly against the children of professors and civil servants who had the secret playbook.

Early IIT demographic data was blunt: a thin, urban, English-speaking elite. Most AIR 1 from 1960 to 1990 came from influential families.

Then Kota reverse-engineered the code and sold it to the public.

Daily problem sheets. Pattern drills. Standardized shortcuts. A brute-force playbook that didn't care about your surname, your school, or your spoken English.

Did Kota turn test-prep into an ugly, soul-crushing factory? Absolutely.

But for millions of small-town kids, that factory was the only door in the wall. The old elite complained that Kota killed the spirit of real engineering

What it actually killed was their monopoly

Whether it's a building collapse, a devastating fire or any other man-made tragedy, the greedy businessman who knowingly violates safety norms is undoubtedly a criminal.

But let's stop pretending that he acted alone.

Almost every such large-scale illegality can survive only with protection, patronage and wilful blindness from within the system. Anyone who has seen the system from close quarters knows this.

The real question is: how many more lives are we willing to sacrifice before we decide enough is enough?

• How many deaths make a warning?
• How many deaths make a scandal?
• How many deaths make a reform?

Every such tragedy is often the final outcome of a long chain of corruption, negligence, compromise and greed.

The law needs to be more effective. Its implementation must become even harsher.

And those whose actions or omissions lead to such deaths, whether in business or in public office, should be prosecuted for nothing less than murder.

Yesterday RGI declared questions for the first round (Household Listing) of Census 2027. Here Question 12 on caste category omits OBC/SEBC. It would mean that recording of caste names in the second phase will be filtered via the official SC/ST list and the caste names will be matched with the official list. But for OBC, there would be open-ended recording (without being filtered through OBC category and matched with official OBC list) of caste names, which will throw up thousands or lakhs of surnames (dozens for the same caste) that cannot be classified for years. This is exactly how SECC 2011 got sabotaged. Census 2027 is headed in the same direction, unless we wake up now.

सेन्सस का पहला चरण होता है household listing का जिसमे हर परिवार की गिनती की जाती है। कल RGI ने उसके सवाल सार्वजनिक किए: उसके जाति के प्रश्न में SC, ST का जिक्र है लेकिन OBC (सरकारी भाषा में SEBC) का जिक्र नहीं है। इसका मतलब है कि दूसरे चरण में जब व्यक्तियों की गिनती होगी और उनकी जाति पूछी जाएगी उस वक्त SC और ST की जाति का सरकारी सूची से मिलान करने के बाद उसे रिकॉर्ड किया जाएगा। लेकिन OBC से General की तरह अपनी जाति का नाम लिखवाने के लिए कहा जाएगा। जाहिर है एक ही जाति के दर्जनों नाम मिलेंगे (‘यादव’ का नाम अहीर, राव, राय, मंडल, चौधरी जैसा कुछ भी हो सकता है) और कुल मिलाकर हजारों या लाखों जातिनाम मिलेंगे। फिर सालों तक उसका विश्लेषण नहीं हो सकेगा। फिर कहा जाएगा कि यह असंभव है। ठीक यही खेल SECC 2011 के साथ हुआ था। यानी जातिवार जनगणना को नाकाम करने का खेल शुरू हो चुका है। अगर अब ना जागे तो देर हो जाएगी।
