In a tribal village in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, a long-unused solar system has become the foundation of a new rural livelihood. With guidance from Vaagdhara, farmer Baksu Bhai revived a dormant five-kilowatt solar installation and connected it to a rice mill and spice grinder. The enterprise now provides essential services within the village while generating a steady additional income for his family. The story highlights how clean energy, local knowledge, and technical support can work together to strengthen rural economies, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and create sustainable, community-based development rooted in village life.

Democracy’s Missing Half: Women and the Struggle for Equal Representation
by Vikas Parashram Meshram
https://t.co/a35vigS1ZO
Women’s representation in parliaments worldwide has reached 27.5 percent, but progress has slowed sharply and leadership positions remain overwhelmingly male. Drawing on recent data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN reports, this article examines persistent gender gaps in political representation, education, employment, and decision-making. It highlights how quota systems have improved outcomes in some countries while structural barriers, discrimination, and violence continue to limit women’s participation. Focusing on both global trends and India’s experience, the article argues that meaningful democracy requires women’s equal presence and influence in institutions where public decisions are made.

In Khandora, a small tribal village in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, a long-standing demand for a proper Anganwadi centre has finally been realised through collective community action. After two decades of functioning from a cramped rented room, villagers organised through the Krishi evam Adivasi Swaraj Sangathan and the Gram Swaraj Samuh, took the issue to the Gram Sabha, and persistently followed up with authorities. The result is a new child-friendly Anganwadi serving 83 children and supporting mothers and health workers. The story highlights how organised community participation can help secure essential public services and strengthen local democracy.
In Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua district, Borpada village turned to an old Bhil tradition to solve a present-day water crisis.
After repeated appeals to the panchayat failed, residents revived Halma, a form of collective labour where villagers work together without wages, guided by mutual support and community responsibility.
On May 6, 2026, men and women gathered with baskets, spades and pickaxes to clean a public well that had filled with silt, stones and debris over three years.
For Borpada, Halma is a reminder that tribal traditions can still offer powerful models of community action and local development.

by Vikas Parashram Meshram

Climate change is no longer a distant warning for farmers. Rising temperatures, deadly heat waves, erratic rainfall, droughts, and collapsing ecosystems are already scorching fields across the world. This article examines how extreme heat is reducing crop yields, threatening livestock, exhausting agricultural workers, and deepening food insecurity from South Asia to sub-Saharan Africa. Scientific studies now show that even a one-degree rise in temperature sharply increases volatility in staple crop production. India too faces an alarming future of harsher heat waves and destructive rainfall. The crisis is not only agricultural. It is a direct threat to food, livelihoods, and survival itself.

Vikas Parashram Meshram’s article revisits the life and literary legacy of Baburao Bagul, one of the most influential voices in Marathi Dalit literature. From “Jevha Mi Jat Chorli” to “Maran Swast Hot Ahe,” Bagul brought the brutal realities of caste oppression, poverty and social exclusion into modern Indian literature with rare intensity. The article also examines his powerful story “Aai,” which explores the intersecting burdens of caste, gender and motherhood faced by Dalit women. By grounding political inequality in everyday experience, Bagul transformed Marathi literature and helped carry Dalit writing onto the global literary stage.
