The Justice Secretary has refused to rule out ditching David Lammy’s disastrous and sinister plan to curb our ancient right to trial by jury.

The new Prime Minister has called jury trials a “lynchpin of a fair society”, sacked the previous Justice Secretary, David Lammy, and privately signalled that he would axe Lammy’s reforms.

Yet the proposals remain on the table. The Courts and Tribunals Bill, which includes proposals to halve the number of jury trials, returns to the House of Commons on 13 October.

It is time for the Government to put its money where its mouth is and drop these reforms.

If David Lammy’s reforms get onto the statute book, more people will be banged up simply for exercising their right to free speech.

People of Somerset, your council is complicit in actively pursuing funding to place Afghan invaders in your towns.

I went back through Somerset Council’s own papers, this is not simply a vague “integration” budget.

Millions are being spent buying housing.

Somerset’s latest Local Authority Housing Fund programme has a total budget of:

Somerset has been expanding its Afghan resettlement housing programme.

The council says more than 100 Afghans had already arrived in Somerset over the previous three years, and its 2025 plan anticipated 11 additional Afghan families through the Afghan Resettlement Programme.

ROUND 1
Somerset approved a £7.5 million housing programme to buy homes for displaced people.

Funding included:
• £3.49m Local Authority Housing Fund grant
• The balance from Homes for Ukraine tariff funding

Result:
32 properties purchased from the open market.

For the original 32-property LAHF Round 1 portfolio, Somerset explicitly says the properties were purchased mainly in:

ROUND 3

Somerset then secured another £1,906,965 from central government for a new housing programme.
£3,579,080 total which delivers 13 homes.

11 are resettlement homes, which Somerset says will support 11 additional Afghan families.

Here is the actual property budget:

£1,300,000 → 5 × two-bedroom resettlement homes
£723,000 → 3 × three-bedroom resettlement homes
£963,000 → 3 × four-bedroom “large resettlement” homes

So residents should understand what this programme actually means:

The council is buying permanent residential property on the open market.

WHERE?

Somerset’s earlier housing programme purchased properties principally around the county’s larger settlement areas, and the council assesses acquisitions based on access to services, transport and support networks.

The important point is that this is not simply short-term hotel accommodation, it is a capital acquisition programme creating council-owned housing stock.

The Round 3 report says the council has authority to acquire properties and carry out the works required to make them lettable.
