@legolaurapalmer he was so underutilized i wish we saw (or rather i guess didn’t see) more of him! he brought some much appreciated camp and humor to that show
if they defaulted to all male voice actors and masc designs and called that genderless that would be far less neutral than showcasing a diversity of presentations and then just choosing to take that as a given so that the story can focus itself elsewhere. it’s quite brilliant!
i actually do have some thoughts on this, though i’m not sure how many people are going to agree with me. but i think using whatever pronouns for the amogi is generally fine and not that big a deal. might go into this more in the video i’m working on
how come when an entire alien species is strictly she/her pronouns (steven universe gems) no one has a problem with it, but when it's they/them pronouns suddenly that means it's worth debating. how come aliens (crewmates) with they/them pronouns are treated as fill-in-the-blanks?
in fact, i think the show does one of the best jobs i’ve seen at portraying a genderless androgynous world inclusive of a diversity of designs, accents, & gender-based performances.
i’m not trying to cancel LSMark or even paint him as bigoted. we all make mistakes sometimes. but this is a symptom of being a shallow ally & i doubt Mark has any trans friends close enough to correct his scripts before he publishes. this is a good teachable moment for everybody
unintentional or not, this is still a microaggression of transphobia. w/ celeb trans ppl there’s nuance since you can’t ever fully erase their deadname but there are better ways to say this that are not only more sensitive and inclusive, but more accurate and correct as well
you could say something like “formerly known as” or “credited by their former name” or anything along those lines. or even “before they came out” or “before they transitioned”. for someone like elliot page you could say like “he starred in the film Juno” etc. it’s not that hard
@alittlevillainy if you haven’t watched Infinity Train yet, it’s one of my favorite shows of all time!!! (co-produced by the same people, Owen Dennis and Maddie Queripel)
