FALSE NEWS: NO TERRORIST ATTACK AT ASABA AIRPORT, ONSA CARRIED OUT A SECURITY SIMULATION EXERCISE

The Airport Police Command wishes to clarify that there was no terrorist attack or security breach at the Asaba International Airport, contrary to reports and narratives currently circulating on social media and other platforms. The Command states that the security activities witnessed at the airport were part of a planned and coordinated security simulation exercise conducted by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), carried out on Thursday, 10th September, 2026 and was designed to assess and strengthen the preparedness, response capabilities, and inter-agency coordination of relevant security and emergency-response agencies.

The simulation exercise involved the deployment of security personnel and other relevant stakeholders to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment for the purpose of testing existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures, and the ability of participating agencies to respond effectively to potential security emergencies. The exercise was therefore a controlled and authorised activity and should not be misconstrued as an actual terrorist attack or invasion of the airport.

The Airport Police Command consequently urges members of the public, particularly travellers and airport users, to disregard the false narrative and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic. The Command reassures the public that the security situation at the airport remains under control and that all relevant security agencies remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, facilities, and other stakeholders.

The Command encourages members of the public to rely on verified information from authorised government and security agencies and to support ongoing efforts to strengthen national security preparedness and safeguard critical airport infrastructure.

MUST WATCH: This is a lengthy interview between my friend @rufaioseni and the former Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Usman Gur Mohammed (@ugmohammed).

Over the course of an hour, he explains why Nigeria's electricity sector has repeatedly failed, identifying two principal causes: incompetence and corruption.

Although he said he reviewed the electricity plans of political parties ahead of the 2023 election, I am not convinced he examined the African Action Congress (@aacparty) plan. One of our recurring problems is that too many of our leaders continue to seek solutions from those whose actions created the crisis in the first place. They mistake status for competence, and that is one reason Nigeria remains trapped in a cycle of failure.

Usman Gur Mohammed @ugmohammed offers valuable insights and clearly explains why Nigeria's power sector is where it is today.

I agree with the two major pillars of his analysis, although I have reservations about some of his other conclusions. One point, however, is undeniable, Nigeria's electricity problem is solvable.

As he rightly observed, it is not rocket science. The real obstacle is the current crop of political leaders who lack both the competence and the political will to fix it.

By the way, I met the former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, at Kuje Prison, where he is serving a prison term following his conviction on corruption-related charges. I was told that on the day he was ushered into his cell, there was no electricity.

He reportedly complained that the outage was a government conspiracy against him, but the prison warders quickly reminded him that had he built an enduring electricity system while in office, he would not have arrived at Kuje Prison only to be plunged into darkness.

Ironically, many inmates and warders at Kuje have found more reliable ways to meet their electricity needs than millions of Nigerians outside the prison walls.

During our conversations, Mamman told me that certain powerful interests in the power sector once converted ₦38 billion through Bureau De Change operators in Abuja,, and another ₦9 billion was flown to Dubai the same day, which he claimed was shared among members of the network in a single day. He insisted that he was not part of the scheme. Of course, that is a familiar refrain in prison; everyone claims innocence. However, when I pressed him further, he admitted he knew those involved and maintained that his predicament stemmed from his ambition to contest the governorship of Taraba State.

Nigeria deserves leaders with vision, integrity, and the courage to solve problems rather than profit from them.

Bluntly put, the airline lied to you. Per Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, when you are flown in a class below what you paid for, the airline is to immediately refund the difference via whatever means the ticket was purchased, and also pay a 30% compensation through whatever means is agreed to by the passenger.

If the airline has told you anything else, it is unacceptable and it is a brazen attempt to evade Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.

Updated: in the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised. There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities. The security agencies will give full account soon.
