This 1839 map of 'Upper Albania' (Haute Albanie) is a powerful historical document.
The Author: It was created by Nicola Vasojević (Prince of the Vasojevići), a brilliant military engineer and former Chief of Staff in the Ottoman army. His expertise and first-hand knowledge of the terrain make this map undeniably accurate.
The Content: In his accompanying text, Vasojević states:
'The inhabitants of these mountains are the remnants of the ancient Illyrians; they have preserved their pure language, and despite religious changes, they have kept their customs and the Code of Lekë Dukagjini (Kanun).'
The Tragedy: This map shows a unified Albanian ethnic space—stretching from Ulqin, Tivar, and Podgorica to the heart of Kosovo—long before these territories were violently partitioned and annexed by neighboring states.
What was once officially recognized as Albania by European geographers is now divided by political borders, but the ethnic and historical truth remains.
