Trump launches a harsh attack on the United Kingdom
It all stems from the decision to transfer the island of Diego Garcia to Mauritius — home to a key US military base.
Trump called the move a sign of weakness and said it had already been noticed in Moscow and Beijing.
According to him, London is handing over territory hosting a vital US base “for no reason at all” and committing “an act of the greatest stupidity”.
Trump immediately used the situation as an argument in favour of buying Greenland — claiming Europe is incapable of protecting strategic locations.
In Britain itself, the opposition also criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the decision. Conservatives argue that Mauritius has ties to China.
Formally, nothing changes for US and British forces for now: London has leased Diego Garcia for 99 years, so the base and airfield will continue operating.
However, if the Mauritian authorities take a strongly anti-American stance, they could theoretically seek to revise the agreements.
The island is strategically crucial — located in the centre of the Indian Ocean, it allows control over key sea routes between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
To build the base in the last century, British and American authorities expelled thousands of people from the Chagossian population — they are now expected to be allowed to return.
The dispute dates back to the 1960s. In 2019, the International Court of Justice ruled that including the Chagos Archipelago in British territory was illegal and ordered London to transfer control to Mauritius.
An internet shutdown has plunged Iran into a communications blackout as authorities continue to unleash their deadly repression against protesters.
UN member states should press Iran to stop the bloodshed and pursue accountability.
