I have a personal story with HSBC. In 2011, I obtained a loan from their Union Place branch to purchase my first car. The loan carried a floating interest rate of 11.11% under their special 11.11.11 promotion. Alongside this, I was offered an HSBC Advance credit card with a lifetime free facility. At the time, HSBC credit cards were among the best in the market, especially with their attractive promotional discounts, though today the competition has increased significantly.

My savings account also provided a remarkable benefit - it allowed withdrawals from any bank without charges, which was a great value addition then. To this day, I continue to use the same account for remitting my salary.

Additionally, I maintained foreign currency accounts with HSBC, and the quality of service I received throughout has been excellent.

However, all stories must eventually come to an end. Similarly, HSBC is set to conclude its retail banking journey in Sri Lanka in 2026, as Nations Trust Bank (NTB) has proposed to acquire its retail banking business.
