Experiences with Maha Periyava: Places of Divinity in the Forest

That was the day of the transit of the planet Guru. A devotee came to Sri Maha Periyava. "According to my horoscope, Guru has arrived at the house of astronomical nativity. It seems that Shri Rama went to the forest because Guru came to his house of nativity in his horoscope at that https://t.co/C0Rtz4F6Q7 it is said that I will undergo heavy hardship. The astrologer says that I should do some shanti-pariharam (appeasement to get relief from planetary afflictions)", said the devotee.

Periyava replied, "There is indeed a view that Shri Rama was exiled to the forest when Guru reached his house of nativity. However, that is not right. Shri Rama was comfortable in the forest... doing tapas (penance), doing sambhashanam (conversing) with the maharshis (great sages), and giving them darshan...

"Let it be. Since Shri Rama went to the forest, you want to do the same, right? There are many kshetras (sacred places of divinity),--vana-kshetras (divine abode in forests), such as Vedaranyam, Swetaranyam, Vilvaranyam, Champakaranyam, Darbharanyam... and so on: Aranyam means forest. You go to one of these Aranyas, stay there for two or three days, have Swami darshan (darshan of God), and come back. You will find mental peace for youself and the astrologer’s words will also become meaningful".

The devotee promised to do so and left the place.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The Creator’s secret

We halted for the night in a Siva temple. In a tiny hamlet on the way to Madanapalli to Chittoor. It was late in the night when we reached there and because of the fatigue caused by the long hours of walking, Periyava withdrew to rest. Since we usually began walking in the early hours of the morning, all of us, the attendants were ready the next day. Periyava said,” Let us start in the evening’. A short while later, when the day broke and the sun began to shine brilliantly, Periyava came out of the temple to give darshan.

About fifty people with little children in two’s, prostrated to Him from a distance. We were surprised. The people of the village had all come the previous night in a queue, had Periyava’s darshan and left. They had come then because they did not want to miss his darshan in case Periyava left in the early hours before dawn. Why then did these people not come for darshan?

“Come closer to see Periyava well.” We said, inviting them.

They did not come.

“We are not allowed to come to the temple. We have been waiting all night to see Sami. Sami has come out only now”

It was the stipulation of the village that they were not to come to the temple for they were considered untouchables. We went to report the matter to Periyaval. There was in fact no need for us to do that all.

“There are plenty of mangoes given to us by those who came for darshan in the night. Fill a sack with the fruit and give it to them. They have not eaten anything last night. When we gave them the fruit they ate it happily.

“You people have not eaten anything last night?”

“No. We waited to see Sami .Sami was inside. So we waited because He had to come out anyway”

How did Periyava know that they had not eaten anything in the previous night? Well that is the creator’s secret.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: In the Protection of Kanyakurichi Amman
A gentleman came from Pattukottai for Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan.
“I bought a new car. From the time I got it, there have been many accidents. I sought the advice of astrologers and performed a number of expiatory rites. Nothing has helped.”
Periyava was silent for a while. Then he asked the gentleman a question,“Is there a village called Kanyakurichi near your town?”
The gentleman was taken aback.
“There is a Mahamaya temple there… very powerful deity. Send fifty rupees for abhishekha to be performed to the Ambal (Goddess) there. Have the words, ‘In the Protection of Kanyakurichi Amman,’ painted on the front side of your car.”
The gentleman was dumbfounded. Recovering himself he said, “Kanyakurichi Amman is the deity worshipped by our family. My father and mother would visit that temple every year. They would have abhishekha performed for the deity. The children in our family would be tonsured there. Somehow in course of time we have forgotten all this. Now it is my good fortune that Periyava has reminded me.”
There were no further mishaps in that car. After all, it was Mahamaya who was protecting the vehicle.
