This night meant so much to me. Being featured in Sasha Velour’s NightGowns is something I never take lightly. It’s a space that always calls me to create from the heart. When I was invited, Zenith and I had already been deep in our Wicked obsession, watching it over and over, quoting it, living in it. So when the idea came to mix Elphaba and Glinda with ballroom, it felt right. Because truthfully, I’ve always related to Elphaba. Misunderstood. Talked about. Picked apart for how I look, how I move, or simply for existing differently.
For a long time I didn’t feel seen as beautiful. I felt like no matter what I did, people found ways to tear it down. Coming back to the floor, walking a new category, and facing all the politics and gossip reminded me how much I’ve had to fight to be respected. But through it all, Zenith was there cheering me on. Our bond means the world to me. As much as I have taken care of him as his mother, he has also taken care of me in his own way.
We never rehearsed this performance. We just trusted each other and let our hearts lead. That night, I poured everything I was feeling into that stage. The pain, the love, the hope, and the power. Seeing this video again brought me to tears because it reminded me that no matter how many times people tried to rewrite my story, I always find a way to reclaim it through art. 💚
