Cruelty exists and leads to terrible acts. But the silence surrounding that cruelty โ the refusal to see, question, intervene or even acknowledge distress โ is just as culpable. The responsibility of parents towards a daughter does not end with marriage.

Do drop by at 4:45 pm for my session with @raghavchandra & #SanjeevChopra, moderated by #VenuDhingra๐ A full day of literary dialogue organised annually by #HouseOfHarmonyLitFest (Harshali Singh & Mona Vera) at the Kiran Nader Museum on March 15.
#Opinion | As #India moves to operationalise its #LabourCodes, the focus shifts from legislation to interpretation. @SumitaDawra examines how the uniform wage definition, the 50% cap on exclusions, and questions around minimum wages and overtime are shaping compliance planning for businesses.

#WATCH | Delhi | Former Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Employment Sumita Dawra said, "The four new labour codes are unique because they have codified multiple laws... They bring in many unique features that are good for labour welfare, ease and flexibility in doing business, job creation, and labour productivity... The number of people who work in India is more than 600 million, which is almost twice the population of a country like the USA. This large labour force, about 80 % was not covered by Social Security. But now they have a right, they have a means to be covered under social security. That's a very big reform. The gig and platform workers have been defined for the first time by a country like India... Similarly, for the industry, a single license, registration, and return through portals, and the use of technology to bring transparency and compliance, have greatly reduced the compliance burden for the Indian industry as well. We become more competitive with the rest of the world when we consider provisions such as flexible hiring... The fixed-term employment is a new provision that gives employers flexibility in hiring without regulatory or legal hurdles. All in all, this is very attractive to investors and very good for our economy. In the coming years, you will see the economy growing on the back of the labour reforms..." (24.11)

The 2023 Auther Awards was one of those rare nights. Not just for the honour itself, but for the quiet glances, the unspoken pride, the weight of work finally meeting light.
These are a few favorites from that evening , small frames from a larger story Iโm still writing. Grateful for where the words have taken me, and even more for where they still might.

#WATCH | Delhi | On US imposing a 25% tariff, plus a penalty, on India, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Employment Sumita Dawra says, "US tariff will impact our export earnings... But India has many other opportunities. There is a strong demand for our pharma, digital and textile products from Africa. Middle East and Central Asian countries are energy-rich. They can become good export markets for us... This is a massive opportunity for us where we will come out stronger by combining our other strengths... This is a huge opportunity for us to develop our service sector further. We have big companies that already export IT products. We have a chance to do it at a higher value and make AI and machine learning products. We can also create high-value opportunities in biotech... promote medical tourism and ed tech... and attract global supply opportunities..."
