Not a big fan of unearned privilege and abuse of power / wealth.
Sadly, Samuel Johnson's observation on "patriot" politicians is becoming increasingly relevant.
@monatanapadre@RBReich Andrew Mellon and his children made very smart use of the tax system, particularly deductions for donations to good causes, to maintain their wealth. Did you know, for example, that Paul Mellon's donation of the Vinland Map to Yale was a tax scam?
@Beornagainn@RBReich For a start, he's a guy born in 1946, whose childhood coincided with an era in which the US gradually got better and better. Did the high tax rates then applicable to the richest help or hinder that process?
@mental_floss Not quite the truth. You've fallen for Yale's attempt to reclaim the narrative. John Paul Floyd's claims (including the proposal about the bookbinder's note) were made in 2013, prompting Yale's investigation, first results of which appeared in 2018 not 2021.
@RKHodkinson @TomAdlam53 @gavinesler It's not "only in retrospect" if you study documents from the time, showing the progress in provision of weapons and defences. Britain was quite well prepared by the spring of 1939.
