Went to an excellent lecture by Carol W. Smith yesterday @CarpentersHall. I didn't realize how large and significant this topic was until she explained the relationship between colonial insurance companies, the Carpenters Company, and the mapping of the built environment.
Working on a preservation project of a property with a "fire mark." This one, with the four clasping hands symbol, is for Ben Franklin's Philadelphia Contributionship, the oldest fire insurance company in the US.

These are called "busybodies" or "busybody mirrors." The Nest doorbells of the Colonial/Antebellum periods. Franklin introduced them to Philadelphia after visiting Paris. You can still see replicas in Society Hill.
