Action potential (or nerve impulse) is a rapid change in electrical potential that travels along the *axon of a neuron in the brain. Essentially, action potentials carry information between neurons.

The axon is a long slender fiber that extends from the cell body of a neuron. Nerve impulses are transmitted along the axon as a series of electrical changes called action potentials. When an action potential is generated, it travels down the axon to the axon terminals.

So in leaky ReLU, the output for negative input is a small non-zero output instead of zero. In addition to preventing neurons from dying, this action can cause small burst of spikes & allow neurons to integrate inputs over time. It allows artificial NN to learn complex features.

Leaky ReLU implementation brings ReLU activation function closer to the firing behavior of neurons in the brain. When training artificial neural networks, ReLU can suffer from dying neuron problem when a neuron consistently receives negative inputs and never learns to fire. #AI

In the brain, neurons typically fire only when they receive a sufficient amount of excitation, but they can also fire spontaneously at a low rate because of noise and background excitation. In artificial NN, this is similar to negative input.
