lee byung hun newsis hallyu expo full interview in english
🗣️: You’ve received the Foreign Minister’s Award at this year’s Newsis Hallyu Expo. Could you share your thoughts?
BH: “It’s actually my first time receiving an award
at the Newsis Hallyu Expo, and when I heard they were giving me the top honor, the Foreign Minister’s Award, it made me look back and wonder whether I’d really done enough over the years to deserve something like this. I’m taking it as encouragement to put even more energy
into introducing our content to more countries going forward.”
🗣️: Now you’re meeting global audiences not through Hollywood projects, but through Korean productions.
I imagine that must feel especially meaningful for you.
BH: “Back when I was in the U.S., it really felt like I was just throwing myself into it blindly. I went there not knowing anything, and there were so many moments when I felt completely lost. Even after finishing a project, when I attended screenings or walked the red carpet there, I often felt very alone. But when I traveled to Europe and the U.S. with Squid Game and No Other Choice, the response was just unbelievable—on a whole different level from anything I experienced with Hollywood projects before. It felt very new and strangely moving. More than when I acted in American films in English, being there presenting Korean-made work in Korean made me realize just how widely Korean content is known now, and how deeply it’s loved. It was a very strange feeling, but also something that made me incredibly proud and even emotional.”
🗣️: Earlier this year, you were nominated for Best Actor
in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, the first Korean ever to be nominated in that category.
BH: “Ah, it all felt a bit surreal. Just being there, seated among the Golden Globe nominees, was already nerve-racking. But right before they announced the nominees for Best Actor, I saw on the big screen that actors we’d grown up watching in movies—George Clooney, DiCaprio, people like that—were all appearing on the same screen as me. I was so amazed that I asked the person next to me to film it, and I took videos and photos myself too. I wasn’t even focused on who would win the award—I was just so fascinated by that moment. Looking back, after letting go of all that tension, I kind of want to tell myself, “You did well. You were pretty cool in that moment.” But it all felt so unreal that I don’t think I was really in a state where I could fully enjoy it and take it all in.”
🗣️: Could you also tell us how you’d like to contribute to Hallyu going forward?
BH: Up to now, in my acting career, to promote Korea and also
to make Hallyu even bigger—I don’t think I’ve chosen projects with those things consciously in mind. I think what happened was that I naturally chose stories and projects I personally liked, and maybe my sensibilities connected
with those of overseas fans watching them. And naturally, fortunately, those works ended up being loved by many people.Going forward, I actually think that if I become too conscious of that, I might end up making worse choices. So I plan to keep doing what I’ve been doing—stay true to my convictions, choose the stories I love, and trust that people will continue to enjoy those works as well.
🗣️: When do you think we’ll be able to see your new film
or series?
The project I’m filming right now is a Disney series called Koreans. There was a spy drama in the U.S. called The Americans that was hugely popular, and we’re currently making a Korean remake of it under the title <Koreans>.
The project I’m going into right after that is a historical action film called <Nambeol>, which is director Lee Mo-gae’s debut feature. As soon as that wraps, I’ll probably go straight into filming <KO Club> with director Hwang Dong-hyuk. As for when those two projects will be released, that’s still not clear yet.

lee byung hun full speech in eng:
“Hello. I'm Lee Byung-hun. It's a pleasure to be here. I heard today's event is about the new culture being created by AI and fandom. These days, whenever I hear that AI is writing, composing music, and even acting, I suddenly get a little nervous. Technology is advancing much faster than we ever imagined, and as was said so well in the remarks earlier, even so, I think what people are still most curious about and most fascinated by is other people. Come to think of it, I've been living as an actor for a very long time, but I still don't really understand people. Human emotions and psychology are just so complex, subtle, and hard to fully grasp, so maybe that's why. maybe that's what keeps me interested in acting. But rather than just vaguely fearing this new era and these new ways, I'll take this as encouragement to embrace what should be embraced, and within the realm of what I can do, to keep acting with all the strength and humanity I have. Thank you once again for today. Thank you.”
