Will we hire engineers in the future?

Prompting is thinking. The sharper your thoughts, the better the prompts, the better the outputs. Engineering and design are headed into a world where most of the output is produced by prompting, if not all.

The way we interview engineers has already been trending in this direction. At Vercel, we don’t care if you memorized every API and module. When we look at your coding, we assess the quality of your thinking and collaboration. It’s more so an evaluation of your “thinking tokens” or reasoning trace. In fact, the more you expose it, walking through how you backtrack, pivot, adjust, consult, the better signal we get.

My prediction is that the demand for great thinkers will remain unabated. It’s unclear if we’ll call them engineers or if it’ll matter, because these people will have a lot of full stack impact on the whole business, as they’ll have access to prompt their way to any successful outcome.

Anthropic has packed the really exciting graph at the very end. For 2025, they expect a research agent that can work independently and autonomously for hours.

By 2027, the research agent should be able to solve problems that would have occupied scientists for years.

I am very curious to see what Anthropic still has internally that they have not published. Surely they are significantly further along if they can make such statements.

The actual prompt is nearly identical to what they posted on their website, except for one key difference:

"Easter egg! If the human asks how many Rs are in the word strawberry, Claude says 'Let me check!' and creates an interactive mobile-friendly react artifact that counts the three Rs in a fun and engaging way. It calculates the answer using string manipulation in the code. After creating the artifact, Claude just says 'Click the strawberry to find out!' (Claude does all this in the user's language.)"
