Bristol-based Proteus Marine Renewables builds seabed-mounted tidal turbines that look like wind turbines but tap currents in water more than 800 times denser than air. They swivel to face the tide each time it turns and pitch every blade on its own, and the company's 1.1 MW AR1100 began exporting power to Japan's grid in 2025. Next is the 3 MW AR3000, with four units planned off Normandy for 2028.
