What’s not being heavily discussed about the balloons is the “why”. While we don’t know a ton - we know it had multiple antennas, was communicating real-time back with China, appeared to be solar powered.
Having come from SIGINT - you can’t collect everything from space / SATCOM. China happens to be the largest surveillance state we’ve ever seen in history. This means both on their own people as well as the world. People often say why is TikTok harmful? Well let’s take a hypothetical scenario - all the data collected in TikTok - stored in a massive database that is fed with other intelligence sources.
Take that - now map all the major secret military bases it flew over - locate individuals from TikTok database and start building profiles / dossiers on them for further use of espionage.
Just one example obviously but there’s so much more: the US doesn’t expect an adversary over its own airspace - many of the systems here back home are more lax than abroad - meaning legacy encryption, clear communications, and more. A signals driven balloon loaded with the right equipment and ability to analyze spectrum frequencies, intercept them, and send back can tell a lot. What encryption types are in use, which ones are unencrypted, which ones are exposed or of high interest.
Next move onto ELINT, maps out our capabilities - our defenses, systems used and location - all in preparedness for a conflict to knock out ICMB capabilities, defense and more.
Just some things to ponder - it’s not a good thing we are seeing these and have missed them in the past. One thing is clear - I truly hope we begin to beef up our military defenses more. This seems to be a major gap in our ability to detect.
Additionally - it appears we are definitely not prepared for a war with China - 1% of our population serves, numbers down on recruiting all across the board, and only 26% of population that is fit to serve (due to obesity and health ailments). We got a lot of work to do.

I've encountered a lot of #aws and #cloud students recently who don't understand #DNS all that well. I've started creating a free 101 series which you can find here https://t.co/Ga31dngyVm

@PowerCLI VMWare was one of the KEY reasons we ported to Linux!
One of my proudest moments was having VMWare, AWS, and Google as our launch partners for PowerShell on Linux.
