The United States is telling every airport in the world that from now on they belong to the USA. If this stands, it’s the largest global sovereignty grab of the modern era.

But it actually is part of a pattern in which the USA is trying to expand its domestic law onto foreign jurisdictions: Julian Assange (a foreign citizen in a foreign country) had to plead guilty to have violated US law to finally be allowed to fly home, the US coercing others to follow its taxation is the same, and now airports.

Any nation that does NOT forbid its airports to follow this order is a colonized territory.

Look at who actually sits on these planes. Students returning to universities abroad. Workers flying home to their families. Grandparents going to meet grandchildren born in another country. Patients travelling for treatment. A son trying to reach his dying mother before it is too late.

And medicine. Much of what keeps Iranian patients alive arrives by air: chemotherapy drugs, clotting factor for haemophiliacs, insulin, biologics for MS and rare diseases, vaccines. These are cold-chain medicines that cannot sit for weeks in a ship's hold. After years of sanctions choking formal supply lines, many Iranian families abroad carry them home in their luggage. Ground the airlines and you ground that lifeline too.

This is the collective punishment of a civilian population.

But sanctions only mean something where there is compliance. Every airport that refuses fuel to an Iranian aircraft, every agent who stops selling its tickets, becomes an instrument of that punishment. Each one tells Washington that its coercion has no limit and that even civilian aviation is fair game. In 1988 the USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing all 290 people on board, 66 of them children. The logic that brought down a civilian airliner with a missile now seeks to ground an entire civilian fleet by decree.

Those who comply should understand what they are legitimising. The precedent will not stay Iranian. Once cutting a people off from the sky becomes a routine tool of economic war, no nation's airline and no nation's citizens are safe from it.

If the price of refusal is exclusion from the dollar system, the answer is collective refusal. The dollar has become toxic. The only way out is to leave the United States alone with its dollar.

Appeasement does not tame a bully. It only emboldens him.

I usually do a post on Yom Kippur saying something like "It is one of the great ironies that the holiest day in the official religious calendar of the State of Israel is devoted to self-reflection and taking responsibility for one's own part in the wrongs of the world..." but this year I'm done.

I don't want to hear any more about "Jews," "Judaism," "Jewish safety" or "Jewish identity" until the Holocaust against Palestinians is ended. To my fellow human beings who happen to be Jewish and feel triggered by pro-Palestine solidarity I say: get over yourselves.

I don’t care whether or not Israel represents all Jews or whether it embodies or betrays “Jewish values.” As long as you are not being deprived of your rights, thrown off your land, kidnapped and held indefinitely without charge or trial, trapped, starved or shot like fish in a barrel, I don't want to hear it. If you can't stand with your oppressed brothers and sisters no matter who they are, don't cry when no one stands with you. Instead of being Ed Sheeran, crying that you've been "thrown under the bus” rather than for the suffering children of Gaza: be Macklemore, who actually gets thrown off the bus yet says "I am not the victim here."

Jewish people today have a choice to make: either become forever associated with the horrors that Israel has committed and is commiting or stand together with its victims. To those who refuse the latter I have nothing more to say: History will have the last word. To those multi-year are conflicted and uncomfortable, still in a long process of transformation like the one I experienced more than a decade ago: you’re out of time. Israel’s murderous rampage has gone on too long and come too far and people are dying everyday as you gradually evolve. And to those who have already chosen Humanity, welcome!

Whatever particular identities we may have, they are all ultimately expressions of our shared Humanity. And if being Jewish or anything else doesn't mean being human and caring for all of our fellow human beings, it means nothing. We either all come together as one or die alone. May every last one of us, regardless of ethnicity or religion, strive to embody this simple truth and may we all be written in the Book of Life!
