The “tiger” of Shiv Sena was never just an animal. It was a claim — to soil, to Marathi self-assertion, to a politics of belonging that the Congress system could not absorb. Today that same symbol is being used to dismantle the house it once protected.

What we are watching is not a betrayal of individuals. It is the maturing of a model: the *transactional defection* as routine statecraft. First the MLAs in 2022, now the MPs in 2026. Each rebellion is cheaper, faster, more procedural than the last. The whip is issued, the Speaker is approached, the faction is “recognised.” Legality becomes the costume that political capture wears.

The deeper sociology is about the **hollowing of the regional party**. The Thackeray brand rested on emotion and lineage — affect, not organisation. The BJP’s counter is structural: it does not defeat the emotion, it *absorbs the personnel* and lets the emotion echo in an empty hall. A party that cannot offer power cannot hold ambition.

The ₹85-crore allegation, true or not, names the real currency of our federalism — incumbency as a magnet, central agencies as gravity, and the legislator as a free agent. The voter chose a party; the party is now a market.

If UBT survives June 19, it survives as *memory* — a politics of grievance and inheritance. That is not nothing. In Maharashtra, wounded symbols have a long afterlife.

The tiger may yet be loudest after the cage is empty.
