In May 1864, William T. Sherman used the Clisby Austin House in Tunnel Hill as his headquarters during the Atlanta Campaign. Its location along the Western & Atlantic Railroad helped coordinate Union troop movements as forces advanced through Northwest Georgia.

Join us June 6 for a free evening of community fun featuring a classic car cruise-in, local vendors, kids activities, and a movie on the lawn at dark. The evening will also include a special D-Day tribute ceremony at 4 PM honoring our veterans.
General Joseph E. Johnston used Dalton as a key Confederate headquarters during the Civil War. In May 1864, the town hosted his grand review of the Army of Tennessee before Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, highlighting Dalton’s importance as a railroad and supply hub.
Today, we are grateful for the freedom to gather, travel, explore, and enjoy the communities we love because of their courage and service. From all of us at Visit Dalton, we wish you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.
During the Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns, Dalton became a key Confederate hub because of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. Its rail connections supported troop movements, supplies, and communication, making the town vital to military operations in Northwest Georgia.
The Great Locomotive Chase of April 12, 1862, sped through Dalton and Tunnel Hill as Union raiders stole the locomotive General to disrupt Confederate supply lines. Though unsuccessful, the chase became one of the Civil War’s most famous railroad stories.
