This statement underscores his deep admiration for Istanbul.
Today, around thirty of Ayvazovski’s works are preserved in various Turkish institutions, including Dolmabahçe Palace and the Naval Museum.
Ivan Konstantinovich Ayvazovski was an eminent marine painter who visited Istanbul several times between 1845 and 1890, during the reigns of four different sultans. ✨
His masterpieces, such as “Istanbul from Galata” and “A Coffeehouse on the Bosphorus,” vividly depict the city’s architectural features and everyday life of the era. 🖼️
He once remarked, “I am now beginning to paint a large picture of Istanbul... Perhaps there is no place more majestic than this city. When I visit Istanbul, Naples and Venice are forgotten.”
