If you are a student or researcher, do not miss this post:
Review papers can be a great way to highlight your research aptitude as it requires: scientific communication, review of literature & publication skills.
But first;
1/ What is a Review Paper?
• Summarises the state of knowledge on a given subject.
• Highlights gaps/weaknesses in the way the topic has been approached scientifically.
• Discusses why it is significant to do better research on the topic/Answers why is this topic important?
• Recommends ways to improve diversify, strengthen research in that topic.
• Based on this systematic review, proposes a few research directions for scientists to test empirically and scientifically.
2/ What are the steps to go about a review paper?
• Define a topic & audience for the paper
The topic should:
It could be something that you have read a series papers on & feel the need to summarise and evaluate different positions that exist on the topic.
E.g., talk about the different viewpoints/methodologies/frameworks existing on stress management.
- should have an impact or relevance for the audience.
- should be well defined.
So that the review has an aim or a question to address & is not a messy summary of thousands of papers.
• How to define a topic?
Perform an extensive literature review by reading and summarising the key points from papers related to your topic of interest.
You can use the following software to find related papers: Connected Papers
• Keep adding your papers/references to a citation manager such as Zotero, Mendeley and Endnote.
You can simply google “How to add Zotero/Mendeley extension to my browser”.
Create a library of these papers so that you can use the software to create a bibliography for you in whichever format you require (APA/Chicago/MLA) etc.
• Define exclusion criteria for the papers that you would review.
E.g., You might want to exclude papers that were published before 2000 & so on.
• Read review papers on the topic you’re trying to review to understand how other researchers have tackled similar topics.
Reading a few review papers will highlight a trend, reduce the number of papers you would have to individually read & save you time.
• If you find that other researchers have already published a review paper on your topic of interest, do not give up.
Discuss the strengths and limitations of previous reviews or find a newer angle that hasn’t been adequately reflected in older reviews.
• Structure of review
Make sure that your review covers the following categories:
- Background (state of research, introduction etc.)
- Method (search engines, keywords used, exclusion criteria)
- Results
- Conclusion
- Significance: Why was this important?
-Future directions for researchers as to how they could fill the existing gaps in this topic.
- Limitations of your own review.
- Bibliography
- Funding information, conflict of interest statement, acknowledgements etc

It is heartbreaking to see so many students getting rejected by their dream universities every year! 🥹
It is not because your profile is not impressive, but it is probably because you lack the correct strategy.
Follow these tips to maximise your chances of winning a fully funded #phd and #masters
1. Identify labs & supervisors
Go to Google Scholar & type the areas of your interest to see research papers & profs of your interest.
Organise them in the order of recency
Find out their institute & read about their ongoing projects on the department website.
Or if they have advertised a position, read the project description properly (such as aims of the research, duties of the candidate etc.).
This will help you identify your fit with the lab.
Shortlisting universities just by their "rank" is a hollow approach.
2. Cold-email supervisors.
Most cold-emails receive no response.
Why?
Because you may be talking too much about yourself rather than how you can contribute to prof's research.
The majority of your cold-email should discuss why you think you are the right fit (preferably in points) for their lab.
Talk about the contributions you can make to their work/what makes you curious about their research.
3. Understand the requirements for applications.
• Do you have the necessary qualifications?
• Have you taken the proficiency tests?
• Do you have your transcripts ready?
Brilliant applications get rejected because they are incomplete.
4. Understand whether the program is fully funded or partially funded or has no funding at all.
Many of you apply to places without any funding.
This requires you to find external scholarships, which is relatively harder to find.
5. Leverage your SoP.
Mention 4 key points to make it irresistible:
- What makes you curious about research?
- What makes you prepared for this program?
- Why is this program the best for you?
- Why is this program beneficial for your future?
6. Curate an effective CV.
Your CV should NOT have colors or unnecessary tables. This looks childish.
Use the CV format by Harvard & McGill University to write yours. You can simply google those.
7. Get your Letters of Recommendation in time.
Let the prof have information about why you are an exceptional candidate for the program(s) you're applying to.
Let them also know how their guidance & mentorship has influenced you in the direction of research.
8. Don't mess up in your interviews!!!
It's so heartbreaking to see students making it to the final stage of the applications only to get rejected due to lack of preparation for the interview.
8. Don't mess up in your interviews!!!
It's so sad to see students making it to the final stage of the applications only to get rejected due to lack of preparation for the interview.
Applying to graduate school is easy if you have the right strategy!
