This is the current state of Syracuse's connectivity south of Dr. King Elementary. Without the highway embankment, Woodland Ave photographed here would have direct access to Oakwood. The same goes for a handful of other existing dead ends in the Southside. Viewable @visualizing81
Interesting thread here. Moving the offramp farther south would also address concerns and disappointment from community members that the west entrance to Oakwood Cemetery will remain closed under the current construction plans.
Syracuse told them the offramp can't be right next to Dr King, and it can't
but NYSDOT decided to fix that problem by shrinking the Grid when a better solution would have been to extend it South
they made that bad decision to avoid increasing drive times from Pompey to Downtown
The change is impressive! This is the work of $575,000 in state and national preservation grants. In a recent interview with Pastor Daren Jaime, he told me that with inflation the project may need to raise upwards of $1 million more to develop the interior.
This @inthesaltcity post got me looking deeper at the new NYSDOT I-81/Community Grid plan through Syracuse.
Grid advocates talked for years about the benefits of connecting the SU Hill w/ the Southside more. By fully severing any intersection at MLK, this plan does the opposite.
The key here will be focusing on equitable development, leadership from community members, and outreach to families who were displaced in the '60s and '70s and therefore no longer live directly next to the viaduct.
The Common Council will invest $550,000 to better integrate the Interstate 81 community grid plan into Syracuse’s neighborhoods.

Mayor Walsh welcomed @SecretaryPete to Syracuse today to meet with community members regarding the I-81 project. With the aging viaduct in the background, Buttigieg said, “The city is rebounding in an extraordinary way, but the consequences of this legacy are still with us.”
You can visit this link from the @NYCLU and https://t.co/n687HJYKTI to learn more about the NYCLU's recommendations for the community grid project, such as putting a portion of the land freed by the viaduct's removal into a community land trust.
With a portion of I-81 is crumbling, it's vital that the construction project to replace it aim to improve housing conditions, health outcomes, and economic + educational opportunities.
Tell the @NYSDOT to build a more equitable future in Syracuse.
