innovating resilience for biodiversity & livelihoods @ReefScan @UN @FAOfish Member of the Board @EUmissionOcean @OurMissionOcean See you at EU Ocean Days 2026🌊
Don’t get cold feet watching this! 🌊
My friend Morgan Maassen (@morganmaassen) just sent me his latest effort and he has captured something fundamental about our connection with the Ocean.
“Rán: A Scandinavian Surfing Saga” follows Swedish big-wave charger Freddie Meadows hunting waves from the freezing Baltic Sea, through the North Atlantic, all the way to an Arctic Circle big wave discovery. Snow storms, tiny swell windows, and then one magic morning with snow falling at their feet while they score waves that rival Tahiti and Fiji. They even brought in legends Nic Von Rupp and Andrew Cotton for the mission. As a diver and underwater filmmaker, the raw connection these guys have with the ocean in such brutal conditions is seriously inspiring.

Big props to Freddie and Morgan for pushing limits where most people wouldn’t even go.
Constructive exchange with @BronisRopeLT and 🇱🇹 @LRSeimas Committee on Rural Affairs and Committee on Environment Protection to discuss how EU ocean and fisheries policies can support Baltic coastal communities.
I provided updates on the newly adopted #OceanEye, the upcoming #OceanAct, and the Coastal Communities Strategy, with which we are investing in resilience, skills, and a diversified blue economy.
Lithuania’s contribution is key as we shape Europe’s oceans to be sustainable, competitive, and fair for all. 🌊
Great visit to 🇱🇹 companies FishNet and Arvydai, where I had the opportunity to see how innovation is transforming aquaculture.🐟
With over 70% of seafood consumed in the EU being imported, expanding sustainable EU aquaculture is key. Lithuania’s plan to double output by 2030 shows the way forward.
#EMFAF funds can accelerate modernisation, while #Vision2040 will guide long-term growth. From energy efficiency to market access, we’re working to ensure Lithuania’s aquaculture thrives.
Climate: 80% likelihood of an El Niño event during June–August 2026, @WMO Chief tells journalists at @UNGeneva.
Emerging El Niño conditions are likely to shift global temperatures & rainfall, increasing the risk of extreme weather over the coming months.

Pleased to launch “FAO and the SDGs – Accelerating Transformation through the Four Betters”. This publication highlights how @FAO is working with Members to accelerate progress towards the #SDGs through the transformation of agrifood systems and the #4Betters.
It was a pleasure to meet the next generation of scientists, engineers and agricultural leaders at the Belarusian State Agrarian Technical University. The transformation of agrifood systems depends on knowledge, science, innovation and, above all, young people. #4Betters
We launched the new €5 billion Scaleup Europe Fund to support high-growth companies in artificial intelligence, quantum, clean technologies, biotechnology, space, and more.
First close and initial investments by autumn 2026!
🌊 Europe must lead in ocean observation, resilience & innovation.
With #OceanEye, the @EU_Commission invests in ocean technologies, AI-powered systems and the future EU Digital Twin Ocean to boost competitiveness, security & tech sovereignty.

🌍🌱As we look to the IPCC 7th assessment, we must ensure agrifood systems solutions are placed at the 💚 of climate science discussions.
@FAO & @IPCC_CH are hosting an expert meeting to review impacts of #climatechange on agrifood systems.

Pleased to meet with 🇱🇹 Minister Andrius Palionis to discuss #Lithuania’s fishing and Aquaculture sectors as well as EU fisheries policy and upcoming simplification initiatives.
From #OceanEye to #Vision2040 for fisheries and aquaculture, we’re working to ensure science, sustainability, and fairness guide our policies, while the next EU budget offers new opportunities.
The Baltic’s strength lies in its coastal communities, and the @EU_Commission is here to support them. 🇪🇺
One year after launching the #EUOceanPact, we’re turning ambition into action with #OceanEye: a game-changer for how Europe understands and protects our oceans. 🔬🌊
#OceanEye positions the EU at the forefront of ocean observation and as the world’s leading provider of ocean intelligence.
Why does this matter? With better understanding of the ocean we will be in a better position
🔹to protect and restore ocean health,
🔹to boost the competitiveness of our blue economy,
🔹to strengthen the resilience and preparedness of coastal communities,
🔹and to contribute to maritime security, safety and defence.
With @EZaharievaEU, we’re bridging science, innovation, and people, because the ocean’s future is our future.
🍲Food should nourish, not harm. Yet foodborne diseases cause 1.52 million deaths and USD 310 billion in productivity losses, ranking second only to tuberculosis in economic burden.
This #WorldFoodSafetyDay, let’s turn burden into solutions.

Adopted today: #OceanEye, the @EU_Commission's ocean observation initiative.
The initiative supports the EU’s ambition to become a global leader in ocean intelligence by 2035 - a key economic & geopolitical choice, a strategic imperative for Europe.

A frank discussion with the @EP_Fisheries on the findings of the #CFP evaluation as we shape the future of EU fisheries and aquaculture and prepare the #Vision2040.
The evaluation shows real progress in reducing overfishing and strengthening science-based fisheries management, but also tells us that challenges remain, in particular the need to strengthen the sector’s economic resilience and look at simplification.
I thank the Committee members for the constructive discussion and valuable feedback, which will feed our next steps.
Together, we can build a fisheries policy that delivers for fishers, coastal communities, and a healthy ocean. 🌊🎣
"The potential outcomes could be even more severe than projected."
PML's Prof Helen Findlay writes for Monagbay explains why uncertainty about #AMOC collapse - which is shifting due to #ClimateChange is not a reason to wait - it’s a reason to act.

💡 The AMOC has dominated headlines in recent months. A study from @Inria combined real-world ocean observations with climate models to improve future projections, finding the AMOC could slow by 42–58% by 2100 - almost certain to end in collapse.
