🔐 Online Safety and the need for personal data protection go hand in hand.

⭕ For years, Sri Lankan supermarkets have employed loyalty card systems. However, a new trend among Sri Lankan clothing retailers raises serious concerns about consumer privacy. These stores now refuse to issue a bill unless the customer provides a phone number.

⭕ If a customer doesn't have a loyalty card, the cashier will insist on a phone number, claiming that the bill will be sent via SMS. This creates a situation where refusal becomes extremely difficult unless you abandon your intended purchases and walk away.

⭕ What makes this practice especially concerning is that these retailers, including supermarket chains, sell the collected personal information to third parties. For the right price, one could gain access to this sensitive database, posing significant risks to individual privacy.

⭕ Members of Parliament should consider adding an amendment to the Online Safety Bill currently in process. This amendment should directly address this troubling practice. If a customer is not willing to share their personal information, they should not be forced to do so.
