My mother :

The year was 1996. My mother was due for retirement from her job. I was invited for her farewell function.

There were around 100 people in the function. It started formally with her seniors talking about the good work that she had done.

Then her colleagues spoke informally about their office life together.

At the end, they asked me whether I would like to say a few words. It seemed more out of courtesy and formality.

I could not have missed this opportunity. I had this rare opportunity to publicly acknowledge my mother’s contribution to my life.

I said, “I am Dr Shrirang Joshi. This degree ‘Dr’ is solely because my mother worked and supported my education.

I was a studious student and had dreams of becoming a doctor. However, some uncertainty about my education cropped up when my father passed away during my 12th Std. My mother was not working then.

Since our financial situation was not good, people started suggesting work opportunities for me. My mother took a stand at that time. She told me that I should keep on studying and she will take up a job.

My mother rose to face the challenge thrown by life.

At the age of 40, with no college degree and no prior work experience, she took up a job and started working.

I could study and do what I wanted because of my mother’s work.

It is said that God sent mothers to Earth because he could not come himself. I have experienced that. She has been my guardian angel.

My talk moved my mother to tears. She had not expected such a talk.

I have given hundreds of speeches. But this was the most difficult and the most satisfying one.

Happy Mothers day to all mothers !

P.S: She will be completing 87 years of age in June.
