Untrained and from a non-musical background, everything I know about the soul of a song comes from listening to just one man: Kishore Kumar.
His voice was naturally trained. You cannot teach that low chest baritone and deep resonance to express a feeling at its base. It wasn't academic.
I recently removed my Kishore Kumar covers from my YouTube channel (VAM). Not to hide his influence, but because I want you to hear his soul inside my original music now. Every melody I compose is guided by him.
