A both funny and educational meme. Let me explain:
In the first panel, Joey is excited because the hotel’s “free Wi-Fi” is extremely fast. Anyone who has stayed in hotels knows their Wi-Fi is usually slow, overloaded, and frustrating. So when a connection suddenly feels blazing fast, it feels like you got lucky.
In the second panel, Joey checks his device and notices his IP address starts with 172.16.42.x. His expression instantly changes to shock — because that number means something very specific in cybersecurity.
That IP range is the well-known default network configuration used by a device called a WiFi Pineapple.
A WiFi Pineapple is a portable penetration-testing tool that attackers can use to create rogue Wi-Fi access points. It can imitate legitimate networks … like a hotel’s Wi-Fi and trick nearby devices into connecting to it instead of the real network.
Once your device connects, the attacker effectively becomes the network in the middle, allowing them to observe or manipulate traffic passing through it. This is a classic Man in the Middle (MitM) attack.
The reason the connection feels “fast” is simple: you’re probably one of the few people connected to it, and the attacker is letting your traffic pass through so they can monitor it.
So if you ever connect to public Wi-Fi and notice an IP address like 172.16.42.x, there’s a good chance you’re not actually on the hotel’s network…. you might be connected to a rogue hotspot controlled by someone else.
On September 14, 2022, around 11:30 PM, my best friend experienced something that changed her forever. She was staying over at a family friend’s house after a small birthday gathering. It was somewhere she had been many times before. Somewhere that always felt safe.
The man who lived there was someone she had known since she was a child. He used to joke with her parents, offer her snacks, ask about school. He was trusted.
That night, after everyone had gone to bed, she was lying on the couch in the living room. She remembers feeling uneasy but brushing it off. She told herself she was overthinking.
She wasn’t.
She woke up to him sitting too close. His hand where it should never have been. She froze. Her body went still, her mind racing, trying to understand what was happening. She didn’t scream. She couldn’t. Fear does that. It locks you inside your own body.
The next morning, she acted normal. She laughed. She thanked them for letting her stay over. Then she went home and broke down.
For weeks, she questioned herself. Maybe she misunderstood. Maybe it wasn’t “that bad.” Maybe she shouldn’t ruin a family’s reputation.
But eventually, she told her older sister. And then her parents. When they confronted him, he denied it at first. Then he cried. Then he said he “wasn’t thinking.” He only admitted it when he realized she wasn’t staying silent.
He had been welcomed into their lives for years. He chose to betray that trust.
For a long time, my best friend carried that weight quietly. The shame. The confusion. The anger. But what happened to her was never her fault. His actions were deliberate. His behavior was a choice.
She shares her story now not for pity, but to remind others: sexual harassment can happen in familiar places, by familiar faces. Safety is not about location. It’s about accountability.
And if you’ve experienced something similar, freezing does not mean consent. Silence does not mean agreement. Your voice matters. You deserve safety. And speaking up is strength, not weakness.
