The Ministry of Health's Division of Nutrition and Dietetics, in collaboration with WHO Kenya Country Office and other partners, has initiated a six-day training workshop on the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM).
Running from June 24 to 29 at Lake Naivasha Resort, the workshop aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of nutritionists and clinicians from 16 counties in Kenya. Malnutrition significantly increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in children, with severely wasted children being 12 times more likely to die than their well-nourished peers.
The workshop features a standardized training package adapted from the WHO โTraining Course on the Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition 2022,โ including comprehensive clinical practice sessions to improve the quality of care for acute malnutrition in Kenya.
The training addresses significant capacity gaps in managing acute malnutrition, particularly in non-ASAL counties. Participants received updates on the 2023 WHO recommendations on preventing and managing acute malnutrition, equipping them with essential skills to support IMAM services in their counties. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce malnutrition and improve child health outcomes in Kenya.
"The Ministry of Health recognizes breastfeeding as an integral part of sustainable development. In alignment with global recommendations to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding, Kenya has implemented essential legal and policy frameworks, providing an enabling environment for breastfeeding in the workplace." - Veronica Kirogo, Director of Nutrition and Dietetics Services, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards. ~
