आज Vedanta Group के कई बड़े offices दुनिया के कई देशों में हैं।

मगर सच कहूँ, आज भी अगर आँखें बंद करूँ, तो Mumbai के Kalbadevi वाले मेरे पहले office की तस्वीर साफ़-साफ़ नज़र आती है।

19 साल की उम्र में जब Bihar से Mumbai आया, जेब में पैसे कम थे, मगर मन में एक ज़िद थी कि कुछ बड़ा करूंगा।

��स, उसी ज़िद ने मुझे Kalbadevi की गलियों तक पहुँचा दिया। वहाँ कई दिनों तक, एक छोटे से office की तलाश करता रहा।

फिर एक दिन रसिकभाई मिले, जिन्होंने इस नौजवान लड़के की ज़िद को पहचाना। उन्होंने एक पुरानी-सी इमारत की चौथी मंज़िल पर एक छोटा सा कमरा दिखाया। सिर्फ 8 ft x 9 ft का।

एक shared telephone था और हम सिर्फ़ तीन लोग। 1975-76 की बात है। उस ज़माने में अपना telephone होना भी आसान नहीं था। इसलिए पास वाले Rajkumar ji के phone पर मेरे calls आते थे। दो घंटियाँ बजतीं, phone कट जाता... और मैं सीढ़ियाँ उतरकर भागता। आज भी लगता है, वो दो घंटियाँ नहीं, मेरे सपनों की दस्तक थीं।

वहीं बैठकर मैं cable companies के साथ deals close करता, traders से मिलता, और रोज़ business का वो गुर सीखता जो किसी MBA की किताब में नहीं मिलता।

Office छोटा था, रहने का कमरा उससे भी छोटा। Kalbadevi के Cotton Exchange के पास ₹21 महीने के किराए वाले shared कमरे में सात लोगों के साथ रहता था।

कुछ कामयाब दिन, कुछ नाकाम शामें, कई मौसम उसी office में गुज़रे। लेकिन हर सुबह, मैं अपने पहले office का ताला उसी उत्साह और गर्व से खोलता रहा।

उस 8 ft x 9 ft के कमरे ने मुझे सिखाया... सोच बड़ी। मेहनत कड़ी।

ऐसी हैरतअंगेज घटना ना कभी आपने सुनी होगी, ना कभी देखी होगी...

दरअसल मेरे गाजियाबाद वाले मकान की ऊपरी मंजिल पर तीन लड़कियां अंजू, रितु, और पि��की किराए पर रहती है, तीनों ही अलग अलग कम्पनियों में जॉब करती है...

आज सुबह करीब 8 बजे रितु जब अपनी जॉब पर जा रही थी, तो सीढ़ियों से नीचे उतरते वक्त उसके सामने बहुत तेजी से रास्ता काटते हुए एक बिल्ली ऊपर की तरफ जाने लगी, अब जैसे ही रितु उस बिल्ली को ऊपर जाने से रोकती है तो बिल्ली रितु पर झपटा मारती है...

बिल्ली से डरके रितु सीढ़ियों पर ऐसे उछलती है जैसे किसी अदृश्य शक्ति ने उसे उठाकर पटक दिया हो...
सीढ़ियों पर गिरी हुई वो खुद को बचाने के लिए शोर मचाती है, तब पड़ोसी उसे उठाकर अस्पताल पहुंचा देते है...

अभी कुछ देर पहले जब मैं रितु को देखने के लिए अस्पताल पहुंचा तो रितु ने बताया कि एक व्यक्ति काले भैंसे पर सवार होकर सीढ़ियों के रास्ते से ऊपर जा रहा था, मैंने उसे रोका तो उसने मुझे धक्का देकर नीचे गिरा दिया...

उसकी बात सुनकर मैंने सीढ़ियों पर लगे CCTV की फुटेज चेक की तो इस घटना को देखकर हैरान रह गया...
