I’ve been trying to find a way to explain why I love music so much…

Bear with me on this, as I take you through one of my typical insomnia journeys.

Recently I’ve heard a few people say “We need to make the most of this life, we only live once.” Ironically, as someone of Hindu heritage, given that reincarnation is a core belief, I have an innate proclivity to differ.

Yesterday I heard well known astrophysicist and science commentator, Neil deGrasse Tyson, comment in a video that when we die we simply cease to exist in any form at all.

Weirdly and coincidentally, last night I heard Richard Dawkins suggest the same in an unrelated video, where he dismissed the spiritual significance of near death experiences as no more than illusory glitches of our final moments.

Yet…

When I listen to the cynicism of these perspectives I always come back to music… For me, music is our direct communion with the sea of consciousness that fills our universe. When I am improvising or composing I know I am transcending the physical limitations of my body to discover the voice of something eternal, infinite and ubiquitous. Some people might consider that a belief in panpsychism.

Music affects our brains so deeply… the auditory cortex, the motor cortex, the pre-frontal cortex, the limbic system and the nucleus accumbens are all stimulated independently and cohesively by music.

Why is that?

What is the point of music?

To me it is the most clear evidence that we continue to exist as vibrations and resonance long after our physical demise. Ultimately, humans are made of cells, which are made of atoms, which are made of particles, and those so-called particles are actually just vibrating energy exactly like sound. Every atom is just a probability wave, and most of the stuff we call physical matter is really made up of completely empty space.

Music is our way to celebrate, resonate and commune with the vibrating energy of every conscious entity who has ever existed or will ever exist, all in the same moment.

I imagine that’s why I can’t stop thinking about it every day. I can never get enough music in my life. It is the sound and energy of eternal existence.
