Prior to the revolution in 1979 when Iran was an ally they bought $400m of military equipment from the US, but it was never delivered.

The new Iranian government requested the money be returned and when the US refused they were taken to the International Court. When it became clear they would lose the US returned the money which because of accumulated interest had grown to $1.7Bn.

But Iran did not have access to the international banking system because of sanctions so some money was delivered by plane in cash.

And the agreement, the JCOPA signed in 2015 was supported by the UN Security Council, the EU, Russia, China and Germany which is powerful group willing to manage and oversee Iran.

It was only after Trump cancelled the agreement in 2018 that Iran started to enrich uranium above the agreed 3.6% level.

Trump single handedly created the current mess.

His arrogance, arrogance and incompetence is staggering as is his pathological and compulsive lying.

And yet some Americans still support him.
