Last week was our last session of the Pipeline to the Ph.D. Bootcamp #BerkeleyGradDiversity.

Under the umbrella☂️of underrepresented students, there is a group of “more” underrepresented students: People with more than a five-year gap since they got their degrees, in their 30’s, trying to switch career paths, with an international background, and no well-known university to back them up, etc.

Although there are some programs that help underrepresented students on their path to graduate school, there is still this group of students who feel stuck in a hole. Although this Bootcamp is for everybody looking forward to grad school, it is especially helpful for these more underrepresented students.

Dr. @denstreete did a fantastic job structuring each of the sessions. It was nice that all questions were welcome and were understood as I intended them to be—as a simple effort to understand the process of the graduate program path!

In previous years I have participated in graduate prep activity, so I erroneously thought that I would not be able to gather much new information, but I was wrong! Here are my favorite gleanings:

✅Current graduate students can be the source of vital information.

✅Each of us is an integral living being and we need more than a couple of mentors if we’re going to get anywhere: We need multiple role models, emotional support, a sense of belonging to an intellectual community, etc.

This is my favorite new insight because although I aspire to become a good mentor, I realize that I also need to develop skills to be a good mentee.💙

✅Read papers in your research field. This seems obvious, but I never thought about having a specific monthly goal. 🗓️

✅I am using Twitter!!!!!!!
