I campaigned and voted for him as my Governor. I bought into both his alluring promises and belligerent polemics on how he will change Nairobi for better. He mesmerised me with his booming voice, youthful energy and sheer audacity to revolutionise Nairobi. His agenda was seductive. I bought into it big time. I, like many voters in Nairobi genuinely but naively thought he will herald a new dawn of bright new day... innovation and change were the buzz words. I refused to interrogate his agenda or lift the veil behind the man. I saw his short resume as strength. I even celebrated question marks about his academic background and dismissed it as attempts by the political elites to pull down to the gutters a young and visionary leader. 4 years later, Nairobi under his calamitous tenure is a shithole, the comfortable miasma for rats and rodents of similar genre. Yesterday and without having the common decency to inform the voters of Nairobi, my Governor, timorous and trembling surrendered his mandate to the National Government on a silver platter. I did not see a gun on his head. I saw a happy smiling governor, flashing his signature dimples. He left me bitter, betrayed and stranded. He showed me the middle finger! As his loyal voter, I feel cheap and without a voice in the transaction. I was used and dumped like trash. Why do elected leaders like my Governor treat us as trash once they assume office and start wallowing in the luxury of power and the attendant filthy wealth that easily comes with public office? What remedy do the voters have when their Governor without consultation and consent tranfers his executive powers to a stranger in the name of National Government? How can executive abdication and change of power be a secret elopement between State House and City Hall? And when will STUPID voters like me know a snake oil salesman from a distance and refuse to upgrade him to something he can never be? For all our chaos and problems, the stupid charlatans we elect to offices in Kenya, the buck stops with a STUPID voter like me. I'm ashamed of SOME of the choices I habitually make when I vote on polling day!

Once upon a time Parklands was beautiful, today it is an ugly, congested concrete jungle with no green space and no room for sunlight, shoddy, cheap and often illegal developments with no proper sewer lines, overflowing drains, overloaded infrastructure, the uncontrolled sinking of boreholes within a small radius as each and every development has its own borehole, and ignored building and safety codes, this is not development but destruction, and as I have been saying for years, while I do not blame developers, I blame the incompetence and corruption of agencies meant to protect the city, because our greed and failure to do the right thing will come back to haunt us badly. #ReclaimNairobi

The hard facts that some find uncomfortable to accept is that Nairobi wasn’t always this filthy. Even 10, 20 or 30 years ago it wasn’t this bad despite the challenges, but the past 4-5 years have seen rapid regression and more so the past 2 years, the deterioration is at an all time high. Have residents suddenly become dirty and mannerless or is the real problem elsewhere?

Plastic bags are back despite an active ban, drains are clogged, streets are littered, unplanned shoddy developments, hawkers, Boda Bodas, vibandas, its total chaos. I personally feel the real issue is failure to enforce the law. When a city is well developed and organised, the city management must maintain it not run it down.

Population may be rising, but that’s exactly why big cities must think futuristically. You don’t fix Nairobi with shoddy, cheap, mediocre upgrades, you expand sewage systems, improve drainage, maintain roads, and provide proper basic services. That’s how cities like Kigali, Addis, and Cape Town remain clean and functioning through strict adherence to the law and proper enforcement.

Nairobi needs visionary leadership, not your typical hood rat politicans who play politics and apply populist style leadership. A mindset and culture embedded into residents by a serious, transformative CEO. We are in the age of AI and electric vehicles, yet here we are still thinking like illiterate villagers. These useless lines of Kanairo lazima and Vijana muko ngangari…does nothing.

We need serious professionals, refined individuals not clowns.
