In September 2025, Whitney Matthews ’07 took her seat on the Alumni Association board as the Region IV Mid-Atlantic regional director. “It’s important for me to be involved with the Alumni Association because I want to show other women that they can be involved, too,” she said.
Cadet Ebenezer Abebrese '27 had next to no knowledge of the Institute before he applied. In fact, when he first looked into VMI at the suggestion of a fellow member of his high school JROTC program, his first instinct was to search for universities with less intense first years.

That’s how Lt. Gen. David Furness ’87, the Institute’s 16th superintendent, describes his transformational journey as a cadet—a journey that now serves as his guiding star as he leads the Corps of Cadets and serve as the public face of VMI to alumni, legislators, and the world.
