@xreevnd@sudoingX The reason is also distance, you want the memory as close to the cores as possible, which decreases latency. But GPUs today already offload to RAM when their memory is tight
@M0_R4_H4@0bserver4@chasmmmmmmmmmmm no, they said it couldn't run at all, that you needed tensor cores when you clearly don't
this is their reason why they didn't bring dlss to pascal cards
@M0_R4_H4@0bserver4@chasmmmmmmmmmmm this doesn't show that at all, what is does show is that nvidia marketing bs about needing special hardware for dlss
@SebAaltonen@Sacb0y Okay, but when you're modeling 3D scenes that need that much, i feel like at that point you already have access to a render farm, but still my argument was tgat this thing in laptop form is just useless, who is making a movie scene on a laptop with a shitty small screen
@Sacb0y@SebAaltonen So what did all these devs that need so much vram do until now? Everybody was just in their 10 fps editor? I doubt that and nobody does this on a laptop anyway, you dont develop AAA games (the only case where this could be plausible) on a laptop
@Sacb0y@SebAaltonen This is just wrong, cuda is irrelevant for inference today and ofc it wont throttle in their demos.
And no, gamedev happens on gaming PCs and it doesn't need a lot of vram at all. How do you think they made the games until now? Every dev had 4x 4090?
@Sacb0y@SebAaltonen Okay but i doubt anyone is actually doing this on a laptop, the use case you named to me feels like there are very few who need this.
Also isn't a macbook better in this case? Since it has much more memory badwidth. Also I think this laptop will thermal throttle badly
@impaladomestic@nimrag_art@bookazoid_@cnlohr UEFI only removes legacy BIOS boot, not the 16bit mode. The CPU still resets in 16bit mode and UEFI moves it to long mode.
industry usecase is also irrelevant, they gain nothing out of removing it, in fact nobody gains anything from removing it
@impaladomestic@nimrag_art@bookazoid_@cnlohr but they don't make the CPUs just for you, some may have a use for this
removing it would mostly just add work across the whole ecosystem for basically no gain in anything
