The Hague is my home. Global politics, urban design, cycling in the city, brazilian jiu jitsu, specialty coffee and aviation... these are some of my interests.
@GordonDarroch@joostvanspanje@DutchNewsNL To this point. I believe it wasn’t PVV strategy. It was VVD strategy, thinking they could win voters on Wilders’ turf… Wilders only needed to pivot to become likeable and ‘acceptable’…
I remember being a geeky 10yo kid explaining to other children how this plane had a radar image size of a pigeon and flew three times the speed of sound. One of them enquired whether that wouldn’t raise suspicion… a pigeon at three times the speed of sound 😂. I was dumbfounded!
@KaiMThaler I guess political instability is not only defined by whether a coup has taken place. Take the conflicts in NE-Nigeria, in Cameroon, in Tigray (Ethiopia) the perpetual wars in South Sudan, CAR, significant parts of DRC and Somalia and you will notice that Gabon isn’t far after all
Nigeria’s Abdulsalami Abubakar, the General Who Holds the Record For Africa’s Quickest Transition To Elected Govt
As Gabon looks set to join the Francophone West Africa coup club, it is worthwhile to recall the story of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar. He seized power in Nigeria on June 9, 1998.
-He quickly established the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and appointed former Supreme Court Justice Ephraim Akpata as chairman.
-INEC held a series of elections first for Local Government Areas in December 1998.
-It held elections for State Assemblies and Governors, National Assemblies and finally for the President on February 27, 1999.
-Olusegun Obasanjo won the presidential election with 63% of the vote.
-On May 29, 1999 less than 12 months after he took power, Gen. Abubakar handed power to the newly elected president, in Africa’s most rapid voluntary handover of power by a soldier.
-Gen. Abubakar also retired from the army. And stayed away.
-He’s 81, marvellously bearded, and cheerful. Maybe his democratic hand has given him a long good life.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is one of music's best-known works and the most frequently performed symphony in the world
This is an unusual public involvement during the 4th movement execution by the Noord Nederlands Orkest at the Lowlands Music Festival

@Atkinsopht Here is the graph of the actual temperatures. There is no way to fit this onto the graph of the anomalies. They are entirely different things.

From Cambodia & Laos, to Argentina & East Timor, to Bangladesh & Chile, Henry Kissinger may have the blood of *millions* on his hands.
As he celebrates his 100th birthday this week, I ask: will he ever face justice? Any accountability?
