Malaysia hosts 215,000+ registered refugees and asylum-seekers. About 126,000 are Rohingya.
That is a load Singapore refused in 2015.
Singapore’s line then was simple: “we are small, we do not take refugees, send them to a third country.” Malaysia became that country.
A community that stays for >10 years will want work, school and a future. Naturally Rohingya refugees will want more and fight for more.
Temporary shelter that never end ➡️ becomes a settlement question
Malaysia is now dealing with that, while others write lectures from their comfort zone
Be thankful Malaysia absorbed what richer neighbours would not
