Finished the first draft of Painting Basilisks today. 173,866 words across 517 pages. Nice lil bloated fantasy noir piece. Gonna give it a month before a still rewrite. Celebrating with some Dragon's Milk from @newhollandbrew#amwriting#amwritingfantasy#nanowrimo#nanowrimo22
A rich, #sonorous gong heralded the envoy's approach. The giants loomed over the soldiers at the foot of the #fells. Tendrils of mist trailed them like a cloak. The leader wore a bemused expression beneath gnarled horns. "Let us talk, little folk," rumbled Walking Storm.

The last time she'd seen sunlight was on the dappled canopy of the trees in Mendscaper Plaza. A vacation when she was a child. It was so different from the eternal Pittendowns rain.
Strange, though. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to see sunlight year-round.

Painting Basilisks April Update: 126663 words (+26481) Did some paid work in there somewhere, but otherwise it was a productive month. Another 30K to the end?...but that's what I said last month. #shrug#amwriting#amwritingfantasy
Mitterhook Penitentiary hangs beneath Pittendown Station on massive chains, accessible only by air-gondola. The prison sports #minimal security measures - the convicts are free to serve out their sentences peacefully or trust to the mercy of the Abyss.

Painting Basilisks March Update: 101290 words (+18986)
Added some chapters to the outline, plotted some loose ends, looks like a pretty straightforward 30Kish to the finish line.

Painting Basilisks hit 100k words the other day, which means it's officially novel-length based on some definition set by someone some time ago. Probably ~30k to go before a first draft. #amwriting#amwritingfantasy
Realized I was making a character too sympathetic, so everything nice he said went into italics and all he actually said to his staff was, "nice to see you, you're late, get back to work."

Occasionally someone stumbles into the deeper tunnels beneath Pittendowns. The walls in the basilisk warrens bear metal sheets inscribed with dense, tiny script; words from before the world broke. Nobody can read it anymore - whether #history, instructions, or warnings. #vss365
Seven days after they departed, the Wranglers returned with a juvenile voidwurm in tow. Though young, the #massive beast cast a shadow over their skiff as they took port in Pittendowns. If the creature hawling their own ship felt pity for its peer, it didn't show. #vss365
"Serving time in Mitterhook isn't that strange a #fear," Misk said. When he first toured the prison he was surprised at the lax security features. It made sense in retrospect - the Midden hung beneath Pittendowns on huge chains. There was nowhere to go but over the edge. #vss365
Neighborhood Wardens in Pittendowns are issued sidearms - officially called Irons - colloquially known as "messers." They're loud, flashy, and #deadly. Used as a last resort, it's an appropriate nickname considering the fist-sized holes they can blow in a person. #vss365
