Historic Victory: Sikh Lawyer Prabhjot Singh Wirring Changes Canadian Law

Prabhjot Singh Wirring, an Edmonton-based Canadian Sikh lawyer, has made history by successfully challenging Alberta’s mandatory oath of allegiance to the British monarch — a rule that had been in place for over a century.

As an Amritdhari (initiated) Sikh, Wirring explained that his faith requires complete loyalty only to one God(Akal Purakh), the timeless divine being in Sikhism.

Taking an oath to King Charles III would have conflicted with his religious vows, putting him in a difficult position.

His legal journey began in 2022 when he filed a lawsuit while completing his articling requirements. The lower court dismissed the case, calling the oath “symbolic” and not a real infringement on religious freedom.

On December 16, 2025, the Alberta Court of Appeal overturned the lower court’s decision. The court ruled that the mandatory oath violates freedom of religion under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, declaring the requirement “of no force or effect.” Alberta was given 60 days to amend or make the oath optional.

This ruling ends an era. Alberta had been the only province in Canada still enforcing this mandatory oath for new lawyers. The decision was praised by civil liberties groups, Indigenous organizations, and minority communities as a step toward inclusivity and removing a colonial barrier.

Wirring expressed gratitude, noting that no future lawyer in Alberta will face the impossible choice between their faith and their profession. His stand has set a precedent for religious freedom and diversity in Canadian law.
