Algunas tribus aliadas de la cuenca del Elba se denominaban “alemani", que significa algo así como “todos los hombres” en germánico antiguo (all+man). En latín, se les conoció como "germanos", posiblemente refiriéndose a "pueblos vecinos o hermanos”. Ellos se nombraban "Deutsch" (gente), de donde proviene "Deutschland" (tierra de la gente) y la denominación "tedesco" que reciben en italiano.
